Some are so small as to be tolerable, and some can be easily repaired. Others, though, are so severe that we have no recourse but to throw the casting out and start again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, this is far from\nideal. Fortunately, we have numerous ways to treat defects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the five main types of irregularities found in aluminum castings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Shrinkage\n\u2013 <\/strong>Shrinkage defects occur\nduring the solidification process. Open shrinkage defects are found on the\nsurface of castings, whereas closed shrinkage defects are formed within the\ncasting, when isolated pools of liquid are allowed to form within the\nsolidified metal. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Gas Porosity <\/strong>\u2013 Liquid aluminum can hold large volumes of dissolved gas, whereas solid aluminum cannot. As a result, the gas can form bubbles within the metal as it cools, reducing the overall strength of the casting. Gas porosity is most commonly caused by dissolved hydrogen in the molten metal. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Pouring\nMetal Defects \u2013 <\/strong>A few things can go wrong\nwhen pouring molten metal. The liquid metal may not fill the entire mould\ncavity, resulting in an unfilled portion. Alternatively, two fronts of metal\nmay not fuse properly within the mould cavity, resulting in a weak spot. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Metallurgical\nDefects \u2013 <\/strong>Sometimes, the chemical\ncomposition of the metal does not allow for optimum cooling conditions. This\ncan result in hot spots \u2013 hard areas on the surface of the casting that cooled\nquicker than the surrounding metal. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Mould\nDefects \u2013 <\/strong>Metal is weaker when it\u2019s\nhot. If the mould has been poorly designed, it can cause residual stresses in\nthe material as it cools, resulting in hot cracking. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Do We Treat Casting Defects<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our approach to treating\nirregularities in our castings will vary depending on the nature of the defect.\nBut as usual, prevention is better than a cure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Harrison Castings, we have\na dedicated, onsite laboratory that is committed to ensuring that all of our\ncastings have the finest metallurgical properties. In this way, we reduce the\nchances of defects even occurring in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We to continuously monitor\nour mechanical processes, our sand compositions, and our alloys. As a result,\nwe have been able to abandon any inefficient processes that have historically\nresulted in lower quality castings, whilst perfecting any processes that lead\nto higher yields and superior metallurgical properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Metal Control<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our extensive metal control\nprocess incorporates spectrographic analysis, density indexing, and rotary\ndegassing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rotary degassing involves making use of inert gasses such as nitrogen in order to eliminate the presence of hydrogen in the molten aluminum, which singularly serves to reduce the risks of both shrinkage and gas porosity defects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gas porosity defects are further reduced through a process called density indexing. We subject a sample of molten aluminum to a reduced pressure test (RPT), where it is allowed to solidify in a vacuum. The reduced pressure enhances the size of the porosity formed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comparing this sample to a sample that was allowed to solidify under atmospheric pressure allows us to calculate the density index of our molten aluminum. We draw from this information to improve the efficiency and the effectiveness of the subsequent degassing process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, thanks to our\nongoing commitment to quality control, we have greatly reduced the chances of\ndefects even occurring in the first place.
